Dr. Daniel Wheeler selected as Medicine Residency VA Assistant Program Director

The medicine residency is delighted to announce that Dr. Daniel Wheeler will be joining our team as the VA assistant program director starting June 1.

Dr. Wheeler is an Assistant Clinical Professor at UCSF and hospitalist at the San Francisco VA. After completing his residency and chief residency at UCSF, Dr. Wheeler joined the Division of General Internal Medicine at the University of Minnesota, where he served as a core faculty member of the internal medicine residency program and chair of the residency curriculum committee. In 2018, he received the residency program’s Faculty Teacher of the Year award.

Since returning to UCSF in September 2018, Dr. Wheeler has focused on enhancing the clinical learning environment. He is a member of the UCSF Center for Faculty Educators’ Learning and Caring Environment (LACE) program, which aims to optimize the learning environment through faculty development. Dr. Wheeler leads a faculty development program at the SFVA that provides all medicine ward attendings with skills for responding to microaggressions directed toward trainees. He is also a member of the Education Action Group for the Dean’s Strategic Plan. Dr. Wheeler is a Deputy Editor of the Clinical Images section for the Journal of General Internal Medicine. His other academic interests include communication, coaching, and clinical reasoning.

Dr. Wheeler is a beloved educator and we are delighted to have him join our team. In his new role, Dr. Wheeler will be working to improve our evaluation system, promote QI within our residency and lead our chief resident curriculum.
