Patient Care
SFVA hospitalists provide a wide variety of direct and supervisory clinical care.
This includes co-management of surgical patients; medicine consultative services; overnight cross-coverage and admitting of medical patients; specialized care of elderly Veterans with cognitive and psychiatric co-morbidities; emergency room attending; supervision of all bedside procedures on Medicine teams; and attending on medical ward teams comprised of medical students and residents.
Faculty Hospitalist Service (FHS): We directly care for Veterans with complex medical and psychosocial co-morbidities, hospitalized for acute and chronic illnesses, and often with special placement needs.
Swing/Nocturnist: Our hospitalists are available 24/7 to assist in coverage of all hospitalized medical patients, new admissions, trainee supervision and assistance, and other medical emergencies. Dedicated student and resident educational activities are regularly led by these faculty overnight and in the evenings.
Medical Wards: Forty percent of all teaching medical inpatient teams (with resident and student trainees) are led by hospitalists throughout the year.
Surgical Co-Management: We jointly care for and follow patients with complex medical issues or perioperative complications with orthopedics, neurosurgery & podiatry surgical teams.
Medicine Consultation: We provide 24/7 coverage for medical consults on inpatient teams.
Veterans’ Integrated Perioperative (VIP) Clinic: A novel multidisciplinary (Hospital Medicine, Physical and Occupational Therapy, Geriatrics, Social Work) clinic focused on patients undergoing major orthopedic surgery.
